Presentation Abstract

This presentation delves into implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at the secondary level. High schools present distinct challenges and opportunities for PBIS, necessitating tailored strategies to address the complexities of adolescent behavior, social dynamics, and academic pressures. The session begins by outlining the essential components for effective high school PBIS implementation, including the importance of building a dedicated PBIS team that encompasses administrators, teachers, support staff, and even student leaders. It emphasizes the need for clear, consistent behavioral expectations that resonate with the high school population and the importance of a robust system for reinforcing positive behaviors through recognition and rewards.

A significant focus is placed on the role of school leadership in driving and sustaining PBIS efforts. The presentation explores how effective leadership can overcome common obstacles such as staff resistance, inconsistent implementation, and the challenge of maintaining momentum over time. Practical strategies are provided to ensure that PBIS is not only implemented but becomes an integral part of the school’s culture. Success stories and data will be shared from South Cobb High School in the Cobb County School District, who went from Emerging to Operational within just one year of implementation.

The session concludes with a discussion on establishing and sustaining PBIS through continuous evaluation and adjustment, ensuring that the program evolves to meet the changing needs of students and staff. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to refine and elevate their PBIS strategies at the secondary level, ultimately fostering a more positive, productive, and supportive environment for all students.
