Presentation Abstract

Implementation: It’s a Journey will show that installing PBIS is a continual process with multiple challenges to overcome. We will discuss the struggles we experienced and overcame with the intent to inspire other schools to keep working towards implementation. After 4 years, we are still installing but finally feel that we are making progress.

We will describe the specific problems we encountered and how we worked through them. We will provide examples of the multiple versions of the matrix that we attempted to implement and how we wanted to give up. The reorganization of our PBIS team will be discussed and the reasons why we needed to make the changes. We will also discuss the importance and the difficulty in obtaining administrator and staff buy-in, as well as the students. The importance of family and community involvement is key to a successful implementation; without the support from students’ families, local businesses, organizations, leaders, etc., the program may struggle.

Finally, we will discuss the importance of communication with administrators, staff, students, clubs, families, businesses, and community members. Once we began communicating, we started to see changes in the school culture and became excited to implement a new program the 2019-2020 school year.
