Brief Biography

Ms. Mastrogiacomo was raised in Indiana by a Purdue Professor and an Art Educator. She attended Indiana University School of Music and earned a Science degree in Music. Ms. Mastrogiacomo did her clinical internship with the Psychoeducational Program in Georgia. She has worked in a private psychiatric hospital for children and has been in private practice serving the CDC’s childcare center and in several ecumenical centers. She was the Director of 2 childcare centers and has raised her own sons. She was one of 4 Music Therapists in the Clayton County Public Schools serving students with special needs and supervising interns from all over the US. Her husband is on staff at the DeKalb School of the Arts where she coaches students. She plays the cello with the Southern Crescent Symphony which plays out of Spivey Hall at Clayton State University, where she is a mentor to students. In 2013 Ms. M. presented at the National “Students Who are Wired Differently” conference, where Temple Grandin was a keynote. Last summer Ms. M. presented at the State IDEAs Conference on St. Simons Island. Recently Ms. M has been selected to be a regional trainer for Life Space Crisis Intervention. She is the PBIS Coach for GNETS South Metro, Ash Street. She is the Music Therapist for GNETS South Metro serving students in grades kindergarten though twelfth grade and beyond who have varied and multiple disabilities including Severe Emotional Behavior Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Presentation Abstract

This presentation will let participants experience Precision Teaching of the School Wide Positive Behavior Supports, using a Music Therapy treatment modality. Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional. MT is also a treatment modality favored by many students in the GNETS, South Metro network, where it is utilized daily with small groups of students in grades Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade and beyond to the age of twenty-two. As a part of the Music Therapy sessions, students with Severe Emotional Behavior Disorders and students with Autism Spectrum Disorder are taught using Precision Teaching any number of content areas including the School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports expectations. Gayle Mastrogiacomo is a National Board Certified Music Therapist with 30 years of experience in the school setting who also happens to be the PBIS coach at Ash Street Center. Participants will learn how to integrate content with music to teach students important expectations from Positive Behavior Intervention and Support.
