Relevance

It cannot be overstated the impact that Generative AI increasingly has in shaping information and media literacy. Students, faculty, and staff encounter it across social media and in academic work. This proposal highlights a library-led workshop where participants can engage with generative AI in a supportive environment, guided by instructional librarians. This session emphasizes critical reflection on generative AI through the lens of information and media literacy. It helps learners better understand these tools and their applications in personal and professional contexts.

Proposal

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we create, learn, and solve problems, making it essential for students to engage with these tools both skillfully and ethically. This presentation introduces “The Generative AI Game is Afoot,” a themed workshop series designed to explore generative AI through the lens of detective work inspired by Sherlock Holmes. Using the metaphor of digital sleuths and their trusted partners, the series invites participants to unravel the mysteries of generative AI with curiosity, critical thinking, and practical know-how.

The series consists of four interactive workshops followed by an open forum. The first workshop, "Writing Effective Generative AI Prompts Like a Gumshoe," guides participants in crafting precise, strategic prompts to unlock the full potential of AI models. Next, "Perplexity AI, My Dear Watson" introduces Perplexity AI as a conversational tool. The third session, "Detecting Generative AI and Misinformation," addresses the critical challenge of distinguishing genuine content from AI-generated fabrications, fostering ethical responsibility and vigilance. The fourth workshop, "A Study in Time Management: Generating Study Materials in Generative AI," offers practical methods for leveraging AI to create efficient, customized study aids such as summaries, flashcards, and outlines, helping participants manage their learning with greater effectiveness. The series culminates with, "The Final Problem: An Open Forum on Generative AI" that brings participants together to share insights and discuss the evolving generative AI landscape. Through this collaborative exchange, students extend their learning beyond technical skills to include thoughtful reflection on the societal implications of AI technology.

Designed for students, this workshop series equips participants with hands-on skills and strategies to become adept and conscientious users of generative AI. The playful detective theme fosters engagement while reinforcing the importance of methodical inquiry, skepticism, and collaboration, qualities essential to making informed decisions in a rapidly changing digital world. Attendees will be provided a toolbox to create their own Generative AI workshops to engage with their own faculty, staff, and students. Practical tools will be shared to assist in guiding learning objectives, interactive teaching components, and using public domain materials to craft themes that inspire interactions at their institutions.
