Abstract

In fall 2019 I was asked to develop a for-credit Information Literacy course – from scratch, to start in just a few weeks. Having only done one-shots in the past, I went looking for resources to tell me how to begin designing this full course, but I found very little. So, having now taught this course successfully 4 times, in multiple formats, this is the presentation I wish I could have attended before I designed my class! I will discuss all aspects of creating an Information Literacy course from scratch, including developing learning objectives, structuring your content, open source learning materials, syllabi, and other concepts that are helpful in designing such a course. I will also share my experience revising the course as I teach it each time, and considerations for teaching in person vs. online (thanks to COVID, I did it both ways). Participants will leave the session armed with tools and knowledge to create or revise their own for-credit Information Literacy course of any length or format. Though geared towards a for-credit course, many of these concepts can also apply to a one-shot session or workshop, so all librarians involved in instruction will benefit.
