Session Seven Breakouts

Abstract

Structured assignments make online teaching that bit easier. In this session, librarian Henrietta Verma of Infobase, former head of reviews at Library Journal, will discuss how you can help students to write short book or multimedia reviews and teach them about content evaluation in the process. Attendees will learn the ins and outs of what should be included (and not included) in a review. Verma will emphasize ideas surrounding today’s academic critique, such as who is usually invited to be a critic, what materials are usually covered by professional reviewers, who has access to professional reviews, and more. The session, which will draw on Infobase’s support for student writers, will help teach review-related concepts from the ACRL framework such as “authority is constructed and contextual” and “scholarship as conversation,” and help students to quickly discern which materials are reliable for a given task. Bonus: Attendees can learn how to use reviewing boost their CVs and get free materials for their libraries.
