Abstract

This qualitative research study explored the lived experiences of six Latinx young adults who engaged in language brokering activities when they were in K-12 education. Through a Phenomenology (Van Manen, 1982) methodology and a Symbolic Interactionist (Blumer, 1969; Sandstrom, Fine, & Martin, 2003) theoretical framework, this research analyzed the lived experiences and perceptions of the six participants. The aim was to identify how their interactions related to the meaning they attributed to their experiences. This research identified three important findings: (1) family is a central reference point through which participants make sense of language brokering; (2) perceptions of language brokering transformed and became more positive over time, as its meaning evolved through their experiences, and (3) gender does not play a decisive role in the language brokering process.
