Abstract

Physical activity (PA) is known for its health benefits; however, its association with subclinical atherosclerosis in adults remains obscure. This study examined the association between aspect of PA and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). Data was derived from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, a prospective cohort study in the Unites States. This study examined: 1) the impact of both the quantity (min/week) and proportion (%) of vigorous PA on the odds of an increase in CIMT; 2) the relationship between long-term changes in individuals' PA classifications and the odds of an increase in CIMT; and 3) the differences in association between CIMT and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality across PA classifications. This study provides insights into the effects of PA on subclinical atherosclerosis in the adult population.
