Abstract
Current Black superheroes today have transcended their stereotypical representations in the 1970’s. The current Black superhero has the potential to be a site of cross-cultural understanding. My study focused on the superhero Black Lightning and his representation in the CW series Black Lightning. Using critical multicultural analysis, a conceptual framework built upon curriculum studies and critical multicultural theory, this study explored the pedagogical potential of the television series Black Lightning as a resource for enhancing the cross-cultural understanding of White pre-service teachers. Focusing on themes of the Black family, Black youth, and the Black community, my study found that the series defies prevailing stereotypes while promoting themes of resilience, empowerment, and unity within the Black community.
