Abstract
This thesis chronicles the emergence of Arthurian influenced young adult literature, discussing “Chosen Ones” and “Grail Quests” in the Arthurian tradition. The “Chosen One” of each modern young adult novel corresponds with a cultural moment that is original to each era. The universal themes of these grail quests mold to answer the cultural problems of each generation. While older Arthurian stories focus on lust as the most dangerous temptation, their modern counterparts focus on the corrosive nature of power as a cultural threat to modern society. The newer “Chosen Ones” reflect these values by being worthy in the act of self-sacrifice, which is the universal thread throughout the modern Arthurian tradition.
