Building Competency in Dialogue: World Cafe
Location
RU 2043
Summary
World Cafe is a format commonly used to generate a safe environment for supporting constructive discussions on difficult topics. I have used this format multiple times over the years to lead a community, staff, or class in talking about diversity topics.
World Cafe uses a semi-structured format for small groups to move through 5-6 questions on a designated topic (diversity and inclusion in this case). As the groups move through the stations they leave notations for previous groups to build upon when they come behind them. The activity helps the entire group build collective knowledge to support future decision making.
Outline:
1) Overview of the need for dialogue in different formats (5 minutes)
2) World Cafe instructions (5 minutes)
3) Participation in World Cafe (30 minutes)
4) Debrief and Takeaways (10 minutes)
