Moving Beyond A Single Story

Location

RU 2048

Summary

This workshop will address the following goals of the conference:

  • Develop an understanding of diversity, inclusion and fairness (Think).
  • Increase awareness of one’s identities, biases and privileges (Think).

The workshop will use the author Chimamanda Adichie's concept of the single story to begin a discussion of stereotypes and how basing our thoughts and opinions on such concepts is a dangerous practice. From there, an activity will be used for students to begin to move beyond their own "single story". This activity can be a freeing exercise as people are allowed to introduce themselves beyond what someone may have originally placed on them through stereotyping.

The activity will introduce the concept of inclusive leadership and how it is seen throughout the business world as a missing piece corporations are seeking in their future leaders. Inclusive leadership is multifaceted and can be seen in practice through both individuals as leaders and as a practice when working with teams. This look at inclusive leadership will focus on 3 strategies for students to use to practice inclusive leadership:

  1. Seek out new experiences to understand different cultures.

  2. Collaborate with others even in the face of uncertainty.

  3. Intentionally develop relationships/lead others who look, think and act differently.

Examples of how they can do all of three things as students will be given as well as a discussion format will be used to seek out their own experiences/examples. The workshop will conclude with a call for students to seek out ways they can implement the practices of inclusive leadership.
