Cultivo Una Rosa blanca: The Power of the Simple Verse for Connection and Learning

Abstract

In this presentation I will explore the various ways and contexts in which I have used José Martí’s poetry, as well as the music it inspired, in my own teaching. I reflect on how incorporating Versos Sencillos and Guantanamera into my instruction helped students connect to
language and the world, and consider how music and poetry might engage students beyond the language classroom.
