We Interrupt This Regularly Scheduled Conversation: Making Space for Non-Binary and Trans Gender Narratives in Curriculum Studies
Abstract
Issues of gender have been and continue to be a part of the narrative of curriculum studies, but despite the field’s deep commitment to social justice, cisnormative narratives largely drive conversations that center gender. When non-binary and trans narratives are promoted in curriculum conversations, they are often under the guise inclusivity, although largely promoted through a cisgender lens and additive in nature. The goal for this presentation is to bring forth an important and critical discussion about the exclusion and marginalization of non-binary gender and trans gender narratives within the field of curriculum studies. The presenter will disrupt the normative binary gender narrative and urge the inclusion of non-binary and trans gender voices by: (1) highlighting problematic gaps in curriculum studies related to gender inclusivity; (2) exposing ways in which conversations that center on gender maintain cisnormativity; and (3) presenting possibilities for interrupting the current cisnormative narrative of gender to include non-binary and trans gender narratives.
