Brief Description of Presentation
This presentation will include a framing analysis of US news magazines covers depicting Donald J. Trump as he campaigned for the US presidency.
Abstract of Proposal
The news magazine cover is unique among its competing media forms because it is equal parts art, editorial, and marketing and has an extraordinary challenge to stand out among the barrage of media messages we encounter every day. Some might question the importance of the news magazine as we move into the 21st century due to the explosion of digital technology and new ways in which media consumers access information. However, the overall circulation of news magazine titles is declining at a very insignificant rate (1%) compared to the decline in the magazine industry as a whole. Furthermore, the overall circulation among digital news magazine titles is on the rise. Based on the unique challenges that news magazines face coupled with the above data, it is self-evident that the news magazine remains an important media channel within our culture; hence, their covers are worthy of scholarly study. This presentation will examine ways in which news magazine covers that focused on Donald J. Trump constructed and framed meaning about his 2016 U.S. presidential candidacy.
