Abstract

Purpose: Outreach has been shown to be an effective strategy for disseminating health information to underserved populations. When conducting outreach in a group format, the educational materials used should be comprehensible to group members with different demographic characteristics. The purpose of this project was to assess the applicability of an educational video to increase prostate cancer knowledge among a group of African-American men.

Methods: An interviewer-administered survey was administered to a convenient sample of 49 African-American men. Men were eligible to participate if they were 35 years or older, had not be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and resided in one or two counties in the Florida Panhandle Region. All men completed a pretest assessment, watched an educational video, and completed a posttest assessment. Prostate cancer knowledge was assessed at pre- and posttest using a 10-item scale. Knowledge scores ranged from 0–10, with higher scores indicating greater levels of knowledge.

Results: Participants were between 35 and 91 years of age (µ=59.34). Most were married (74%), had private insurance (62%), had an annual household income of $25,000+ (67%), and had a high-school diploma or greater (80%). The mean pretest knowledge score for the entire sample increased from 6.77 at pretest to 8.24 posttest (t(48) = -6.851, p < .01)). Results from other paired sample t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicated that similar knowledge increases were found across different demographic characteristics.

Conclusions: Group level outreach using video format is effective for increasing prostate cancer knowledge among African-American men with different demographic characteristics. Future research should investigate the effectiveness of group level education using video with other health issues that disproportionately impact African-American men.
