Abstract or Description

The effluent of conventional secondary biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contains numerous contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products, coming mainly from households and sanitary sewers which also carry stormwater. The goal of this study is to develop the innovative and cost-effective biofilters of GAC for removing CECs from secondary treated wastewater effluent, and thus to expand the areas of water reuse i.e. direct and indirect potable use. The specific objective of this study is to design, build, operate and monitor bench-scale biofilters of GAC on removal of the targeted CECs.
