Abstract

To the Editor On behalf of coauthors, we write to report errors that occurred in our Research Letter, “Trends in Weight Loss Efforts Among US Adolescents With Overweight and Obesity,”1 published online on June 25, 2018, and in the August 2018 print issue of JAMA Pediatrics. In that study, we reported a declining trend of making efforts to lose weight from 1988 to 2014 among US adolescents with overweight. Our observation was based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. We were subsequently advised by a reader that we had miscoded the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey variable of trying to lose weight by missing a skip pattern that started in the 1999-2000 survey. Herein, we explain the skip pattern and the effect incorporating the skip pattern into our assessment had on the results and conclusion of our original study.
