Homegrown Pathos is the largest piece in Irrational Aggregates series, a collection of ceramic sculptures from the Master of Fine Arts thesis body of work created by Courtney N. Ryan. The sculpture references a Pithos vase, Greek for 'large storage container' from the Bronze Age. The materials in this sculpture are all locally sourced and metaphorically represent the collective experiences of my time at Georgia Southern University.
Statement:
I create sculptures from ceramic and other materials to facilitate a dialogue between our natural environment and the excessive consumer based environments in which we live. These sculptures, which I imagine have grown from their surroundings, suspend and amplify our relationship with the consumer-based materials we consciously and unconsciously display within our homes as a way of creating a sense of domesticity and belonging.
