Founded in 1983 by Dr. Harold Isaacs as the Association of Third World Studies (ATWS), the organization was created to promote humane and scientific study of Global South peoples and issues, aiming to improve quality of life. In 2016, members voted to rename it the Association of Global South Studies (AGSS) and its journal the Journal of Global South Studies (JGSS).
Since its founding, AGSS has hosted 38 international conferences and published 78 journal issues, along with proceedings and newsletter. Georgia Southern University served as Executive Headquarters from 1992 until the move to Louisiana State University Shreveport. In 1995, the United Nations granted AGSS consultative status, expanding its global impact.
AGSS maintains chapters in South Asia and Africa (Kenya and Nigeria), fostering scholarship and collaboration. The South Asia chapter has held 15 conferences, and African chapter members actively contribute to AGSS events and publications.
