A Multifaceted Assessment of a Lower-Division Unit

Abstract

After our state legislature gave us only one year to mount an entire lower-division curriculum after seventeen years as a strictly upper-division campus, we now have our fourth cohort of first-year students and have devised a multifaceted assessment including longitudinal freshman survey data, program director interviews, a faculty survey. The results of the multi-layered review process, along with relevant scholarly SoTL literature and best practices, were presented to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the General Faculty Organization for campus-wide discussion and action. The review has resulted in a significantly stronger model for our campus. This poster features details of the assessment methodology and evidence of its effectiveness as well as plans for building more robust assessment into the new model and plans for carrying out that assessment.
