Strand #2

Heart: Social & Emotional Skills

Relevance

This session relates to the heart and head strands because its entire focus is how to weave social and emotional skills into academic learning. Our approach to SEL is that it is not another thing to put on educators’ plates, but that it IS the plate. It is the basis from which we can deliver academic content. We will provide easily implemented strategies that will allow teachers to infuse SEL into their content and instruction.

Brief Program Description

Social and emotional skills are foundational for success in school, the workplace, and life. Research also supports that if we want SEL to be successful and sustainable with students, then it must start with the adults. In this engaging session, participants will explore the research supporting Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning (SEAL), as well as how to infuse SEAL into their daily teaching practices.

Summary

An increasing number of schools and districts across the globe are realizing the importance of SEL, but are not sure where it fits in-- is it a behavioral intervention or something extra to add into already jam-packed academic content? The truth is, SEL isn’t separate from academics – the two go hand-in-hand, and that is why this series is called S.E.A.L. – Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning. Research is also clear on the fact that successful and sustainable S.E.A.L. isn’t focused on a program. It’s focused on the people who deliver it, from top to bottom.

Adults in education are usually pretty good at the education part. After all, we’re familiar with academic content – we learned it in school ourselves. The difference with SEL is that most adults haven’t taken courses in emotional intelligence or engaged in activities intentionally designed to strengthen their own social-emotional skills. This produces a disconnect and makes it much harder to implement, as many teachers and leaders do not feel efficacious about the content themselves, let alone their capacity to model it, encourage it, deliver it to others. If schools and districts are truly in favor of prioritizing SEL in the classroom, they will need to learn how to intentionally and consistently prioritize it in the boardroom, staff room and throughout the organization. SEL starts with all of the adults.

In this engaging session, participants will explore the research on why these skills are essential to success in school, work, and life. They will engage in self-reflection, discussions and activities that they can immediately replicate with their students and staff. They will explore the competencies of S.E.A.L., the teaching practices that strengthen S.E.AL. and how to infuse S.E.A.L. into their content and instruction. The experiential learning is designed to help participants have a deeper understanding of S.E.A.L. in order to strengthen their own social-emotional competencies, boost their efficacy to model and teach these skills to students, and to build the capacity to infuse this mindset into site and district practices.

Evidence

There is a great deal of research that examines the impact of social-emotional learning on academic achievement. The following resources support our proposal:
