Integrating Alternative Dispute Resolution into International Business Offerings for Current and Future Business Managers: A Paradigm for Curriculum Development Consideration

Abstract

International business managers for several years have encountered varied conflicts in their assigned territories to which they were not prepared to resolve during their training in or after their college education. Such inadequate preparations have given rise to unnecessary conflicts with loss of business profits, insecurity, and negative relationships with affected countries. Confronted by these situations, the author raises the questions of 1) whether it is necessary for alternative dispute resolution be an integral part of international business management offering and is it necessary to expose our current and future managers to cultures different from theirs and to prepare them to apply alternative dispute resolution process on conflicts they will encounter in the future within or outside their home countries? Additionally, is it necessary to fulfill the demands by our students and businesses that their academic programs be relevant to the critical needs of the society. These questions have been answered in the affirmative by the author using extensive legal and business literature searches in addition to a designed syllabus for the course.
