Full Session Description

The session is designed to help early childhood professionals understand the structural barriers based on race that impact young children’s educational experiences as well as their long-term outcomes. The goals of this session are (1) create a shared language to discuss racial equity in early childhood (2) to generate a paradigm shift in how we educate all young children,(3) gain a deeper understanding of the root causes that create systems and power structures that create inequities in education for Black children and other children of color. Participants will learn about the basics of racial equity and justice, including what it is and the structural barriers within early childhood programs that perpetuate disparate outcomes for Black children and other children of color. Information also will be provided about the role of implicit bias and structural racism and how to address equity within early learning settings through a system change approach. Attendees will be provided with many opportunities to participate, including small and large group activities.
