Background
In an inpatient hospital setting, there are several factors contributing to medication turnaround time. The turnaround time begins from the time the medication is ordered by a physician until the time the medication is administered to the patient [1]. Turnaround time does not include emergent and urgent cases [2]. There are multiple steps in administering medications to patients and several contributing factors leading to increased turnaround time. First, the physician must submit the order for the patient. Then, the order is sent to the pharmacy. The pharmacist must verify the order and location, or the nurse has to go to the pharmacy to retrieve the medication [3] ensure the medication is in stock [2]. Once verified, the pharmacist must deliver the medication to the patients.
