Tobacco and Vape Prevention: Expanding education through the schools throughout District 4 Public Health

Abstract

Underage vape and nicotine use throughout the country has grown dramatically over the past three years. District 4 Public Health (D4PH) responded to the need by offering tobacco and vape prevention education in one school in Fayette County, Georgia in 2022. By 2023, D4PH had expanded to 10 schools, reaching over 3,000 students and by December 2024, they will be in 65 schools throughout the district, and it is anticipated that number will continue to grow. Methods utilized by D4PH include outreach and collaboration with schools and parent-teacher organizations, using Stanford Medicine Reach Lab’s Tobacco Toolkit and the American Lung Association’s N-O-T Program. Results of the Stanford Toolkit in pre/post test showed students in grades 6-10 gained knowledge of the dangers of tobacco and vape use.
