Exploring Perspectives on Equity in Public Health: An Interactive Workshop

Abstract

The concept of equity is at the center of the 10 Essential Public Health Services provided by the CDC as a framework for public health to protect and promote the health of all people in all communities [cite source]. While the public health profession recognizes the importance of equity and may have some common definitions, we don’t always know what it looks like or how to achieve it. This workshop provides participants the opportunity to contribute to an ongoing research project to measure the perspectives that public health professionals have on “equity” as a subjective concept to see enacted in practice.

Workshop participants will engage in a q methodology sorting activity, followed by a collaborative analysis of the data. Participants will sort a set of subjective statements about equity in public health that were derived from a focused literature review and naturalistic data collection from two public health leadership academies. The workshop will guide participants through a collaborative analysis of the data collected through these individual sorts with the support of a real-time analysis tool. The outcome of the activity will be a robust conversation about the nuances of perspectives that emerge from the group around the topic of equity in public health practices. By exploring how public health professionals operationalize equity in their work, we can make contribute to research that helps us light the way to a heathier Georgia.
