Descriptive Evaluation of Critical and Non-Critical Violations of Food Inspection Scores in Macon-Bibb County, Georgia, FY2019-2023

Abstract

Georgia has over 30,000 permitted food service establishments and 2,400 schools that serve the public. Routine inspections for the food service establishments must occur minimally twice a year, and approximately 3,000 inspections per month statewide are conducted to reduce food illness risk factors, prevent foodborne disease risk outbreaks, and provide public health interventions. The current process of evaluating the quality of said inspections could be considered a challenging concern in food industries while ensuring the maximum level of food safety and practices. Five fiscal years, FY2019-FY2023, were analyzed from the DHD health inspection reports for Macon-Bibb County to determine areas of workforce development for EHS team members, identify common violations, and develop key talking points to reduce foodborne illness risk factors and promote preventive public health measures. The number of critical and non-critical violations, inspections within each fiscal year, and violations within geospatial hot spots will be analyzed using Geographic Information System mapping (GIS). The potential and ability of trend analysis applications to enhance suggestive recommendations for food safety practices are examined in this review. Attention to the geospatially repeated violations or hot spots is observed to provide personalized recommendation means to enhance food safety practices. The characteristics and patterns concerning facilities and their demographics are discussed elaborately. Further, this presentation will provide critical insight into the challenges and future trends in public health impact and the development of reliable recommendations for enhancing food safety practices.
