Utilization of a flow nurse in a rural Ryan White Clinic

Abstract

The flow nurse assists in optimizing a patient's experience in a clinical setting. The position is patient-centered and interpersonal. It builds the nurse-patient relationship to enhance trust within the relationship. The position assists with patient's improved satisfaction and decreases the chance of patients leaving without services. The attention delivered ensures needs are identified, discussed, and addressed while in the clinic.

The flow nurse provides clinical knowledge to lead the care team. Flow nurses communicate with each discipline of the program and exhibits understanding of the importance of critical thinking and decision-making that promotes optimal outcomes for the patient and team. Collaboration within the team and flow nurse reduces conflicting information.

Incorporating a flow nurse has decreased congestion in the lobby of the clinic. The flow nurse is attentive to reviewing the schedule and implementing changes to the flow that will allow the patient and the team to flow effectively and sufficiently. The flow nurse assess for availability to exam rooms and, if able moves forward with blood work to continue the flow and will re-route patient and/or staff to ensure the continuous flow of the clinic. The flow nurse steps in and assists in all areas of the clinic to ensure patient services are provided stress levels for the staff are decreased to move to the next patient.

The flow nurse supports patients, clinical staff, providers, administration, and management. The Ryan White Program is not a single entity of care; it is a team effort to be the best support for those we serve.
