Abstract

“Gang violence is connected to bullying is connected to school violence is connected to intimate partner violence is connected to child abuse is connected to elder abuse. It’s all connected.” -Deborah Prothrow-Stith, MD, Adjunct Professor, Harvard School of Public Health

For the purposes of this workshop, it can be assumed that one size does fit all when it comes to applying a public health approach to youth violence prevention. All forms of violence are connected. No matter the form violence takes, each is interconnected and are a result of the same causes. These causes are present at the individual, family, community, and societal levels. In this workshop, participants will explore the shared risk and protective factors of violence that affects youth, the prevention strategies and examine the impact of the trauma caused by violence. Participants will explore the risk and protective factors for several forms of violence and the approaches that are effective at preventing them to create protective environments and nurturing relationships for all people.
