Presentation Abstract
What is inclusion? Is it academic? Is it social? It is both! Students with developmental delays such autism spectrum are lacking true social inclusion in elementary schools. How do we get there? Who needs training? Teachers? Administrators? Peers? Parents? Creating a positive socially inclusive climate for students on the spectrum is a collaborative effort. Elementary school years are the foundation for students forming their image of self as a student and a friend. It is crucial to help these students achieve a sense of community and belonging beyond the mainstream academic classroom to a true social inclusion of the school community.
