Enhancing Engagement and Understanding: Multigenre Writing and Its Implications Across Disciplines

Abstract

The implementation of multigenre writing—the art of composing a paper, project, or report in a combination of genres including narrative, emails, charts, and even recipes—has proven itself a valuable method for increasing student engagement, and not just in the composition classroom. This session explores the concept of multigenre writing, how it can be used in every discipline, and how to introduce and evaluate multigenre papers. Attendees will also receive lesson plans and tips for using multigenre papers/projects in their classes. This session also examines how multigenre papers/projects help increase student understanding of subject matter relative to their disciplines, including the concepts of audience, problem solving, and rhetoric.
