Abstract

The second phase of control charting is discussed using the run sum X, R, and S charts with no standards given. Different estimators for the process mean and standard deviation are introduced. The average run length (ARL) distribution is analyzed using computer simulations which use a Markov chain representation, and performance is analyzed. A few applications and recommendations for use in the clinical chemistry laboratory are given.
