About the Collection
Collection preserves images of headstones collected as part of the If These Cemeteries Could Talk series of cemetery tours conducted by the Willow Hill Heritage & Renaissance Center. The tours visit the 35 known African-American cemeteries in Bulloch County, Georgia. The tours began in 2019 as a part of the 400 Years of African-American History Commemoration.
Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is the oldest African-American Church in Bulloch County, Georgia, being established during slavery, on September 10, 1863. The tour of the cemetery was on Saturday, August 17, 2019. There are 561 known graves in Antioch Cemetery with 198 being unmarked. The community was invited to attend the tour and assist Dr. Jackson in identifying these unmarked graves of free and formerly enslaved people.
