Abstract

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family. When incorporated early, end of life care is improved. Additionally, there is a cost of care improvement, that palliative care has the capacity to substantially reduce healthcare expenditures among advanced cancer patients. Furthermore, the cost reduction depends on the timing of the palliative care consult.
