Abstract
This poster describes the experiences of a student who completed a service-learning course. Fifteen hours of community service were completed at Brown’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Statesboro Georgia. Service activities included socializing with the residents, assisting with center activities, and helping staff members. Journaling was completed during and after service and connections were made between those noted experiences and previously covered course content. Course assignments entailed writing descriptions of service experiences and describing how they exemplified course content in the form of specific psychological terms and/or concepts. All terms applied to content from a Psychology of Aging course. Additional assignments required reflecting on service experiences and then writing about how the experiences contributed to learning about self and community within specific domains. The poster will present an overview of the service requirements, the terms that were exemplified during the service, and the reflections on the impact of the service experiences on self and community.
