Melanie West Georgia’s 2024 English Teacher of the Year National English Teacher of Excellence, 2024 Melanie West, a Savannah, Georgia native, is the 2024 Georgia English Teacher of the Year and National English Teacher of Excellence. A dynamic leader, writer, speaker, and educator, she is known for her innovative, data-driven approach to transforming learning environments and supporting educator growth. With advanced credentials in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and mindfulness integration, Melanie has successfully implemented fully functional mindfulness spaces that have reduced school suspensions by over 75% and significantly decreased Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral infractions. Her work demonstrates the powerful impact of intentional wellness practices on school culture and student success. Melanie is also a proud recipient of the Golden Grant Award, which funded her first mindfulness room—an initiative that continues to influence district-wide approaches to student wellness and engagement.

Relevance to Primary Strand
Mindfulness rooms serve as powerful, research-based tools for improving overall school culture, climate, and safety. Rooted in evidence-based Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) practices, these spaces provide students and staff with structured opportunities to develop self-regulation, emotional awareness, and coping strategies that reduce behavioral incidents and strengthen relationships across the school community.
Each mindfulness room is intentionally curated through a school needs assessment, ensuring that interventions directly align with the unique social-emotional and behavioral needs of the student population. Within these environments, students engage in guided breathing exercises, sound meditation, sensory play, and digital journaling—practices proven to reduce anxiety, improve focus, and enhance emotional resilience. These experiences not only help de-escalate student–teacher and peer conflicts but also equip students with lifelong skills for managing stress and maintaining mental wellness.
In parallel, educators participate in professional development sessions focused on trauma-informed responses, de-escalation techniques, and mindful awareness. These trainings promote staff wellness, reduce educator burnout, and improve classroom management through compassionate, restorative approaches.
The implementation of mindfulness rooms has been linked to measurable outcomes, including a 75% reduction in school suspensions and significant decreases in Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral infractions. By fostering emotional safety and positive behavioral supports, mindfulness rooms create a culture of care and connection—ensuring that every student is emotionally ready to learn and every educator is equipped to teach from a place of balance and empathy.

Climate and Culture
Brief Program Description
Stillness that Transforms exposes the bold approach of how implementing Mindfulness rooms led to a 75% reduction in suspensions and fewer Tier 2 and Tier 3 infractions. This holistic approach is rooted in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and a Tiered System of Supports, these spaces teach self-regulation, emotional intelligence, and focus through guided breathing, sensory play, and journaling. Participants will explore actionable strategies for improving school culture, climate, and safety through mindful, research-based interventions.
Summary
What if one mindful moment could change everything? This interactive, research-informed session will reveal how intentional mindfulness practices and the creation of mindfulness rooms help reshape school’s culture and climate—reduce suspension rate and decrease Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral infractions.
Rooted in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and aligned with a Tiered System of Supports (TSS), this session explores how mindful spaces foster emotional regulation, self-awareness, and community connection. Participants will learn how to create intentional spaces and environments that calm the mind, restore focus, and build safety—essential elements of a thriving learning culture.
Through practical models and proven methods, attendees will experience how one mindful moment at a time can transform classrooms, empower educators, and cultivate a culture of calm, connection, and compassion across school communities. Participants will also discover:
- Mindfulness Room Design: Creating spaces for reflection, de-escalation, and emotional growth.
- Tiered Integration: Embedding mindfulness across universal, targeted, and intensive supports.
- Funding Opportunities: Explore ways for funding with community resources partners
- Professional Development: Strengthening teacher well-being and awareness through mindful practice.
- Student Learning Communities: Promoting empathy, belonging, and emotional intelligence schoolwide.
Participants will leave with practical strategies on how to incorporate mindfulness strategies, an awareness of the benefits of incorporating mindfulness schoolwide, a deeper awareness of Adverse Childhood Experience (ACEs) on students and themselves, and simple classroom mindfulness routines—to take back to their schools.
Evidence
Emerging research continues to underscore the critical connection between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), toxic stress, and negative educational outcomes. According to How Educators Can Address Childhood Adversity and Toxic Stress (2020), children with four or more ACEs are 32 times more likely to experience significant learning and behavioral challenges than their peers with none. As ACE exposure increases, so does the likelihood of academic disengagement, disciplinary infractions, and long-term socio-emotional difficulties. While these statistics are alarming, evidence demonstrates that early detection and intervention—particularly through mindfulness and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) practices—can effectively reverse the biological and behavioral impacts of toxic stress.
This study examines the implementation of schoolwide mindfulness initiatives, including the creation of fully functional mindfulness rooms, in two Title I schools serving high-need populations. Within five months of implementation, one middle school with an 85% suspension rate due to student altercations and major classroom disruptions reported a 25% reduction in behavioral infractions and a substantial improvement in student engagement and classroom climate.
Key components of the model included student self-reflection surveys, guided mindfulness practices, restorative mediation sessions, and teacher feedback loops that informed data-driven interventions. Teachers and counselors collaborated to provide tiered supports aligned with a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework, ensuring consistency and sustainability.
Findings suggest that integrating mindfulness within a structured SEL and MTSS framework fosters self-regulation, empathy, and emotional intelligence, while significantly reducing Tier 2 and Tier 3 behaviors. Moreover, mindfulness interventions improved overall school climate, strengthened teacher-student relationships, and increased feelings of safety and belonging across the learning community.
The results affirm that intentional stillness can be a transformative tool—empowering educators to move school environments from chaos to calm and cultivating cultures of compassion, connection, and resilience.
Learning Objective 1
analyze how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress influence student behavior, learning, and long-term outcomes—and evaluate how early mindfulness-based interventions can mitigate these effects.
Learning Objective 2
understand how research supports the integration of mindfulness strategies within a Tiered System of Supports (TSS/MTSS) to reduce Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral infractions and enhance overall school climate
Learning Objective 3
explore practical techniques—such as breathing exercises, sensory activities, and reflective journaling—to promote self-regulation and emotional intelligence.
