Relevance to Primary Strand

This proposal supports the conference’s "Mental Health" strand by demonstrating how to integrate counseling (mental health) interventions within a tiered MTSS/PBIS framework. Attendees will learn to identify students' behavioral and mental health needs and implement tier-specific, evidence-based practices. The session emphasizes collaboration with teachers to enhance early identification and intervention, ensuring staff understand their roles in supporting students. Additionally, it highlights the expertise of mental health professionals in driving student outcomes and provides strategies for strengthening communication with parents and community partners to extend mental health support beyond the school environment.

Student Learning and Development

Brief Program Description

This session provides school mental health professionals with a practical approach to implementing research and evidence-based counseling interventions in schools. Attendees will explore models for identifying students in need, selecting appropriate interventions, setting achievable goals, and monitoring progress effectively. By blending legal and ethical considerations with hands-on strategies and case examples, this presentation empowers school psychologists to promote students' social-emotional health, academic success, and behavioral growth in a school environment.

Summary

School-based counseling interventions are essential in fostering students’ well-being and academic performance. This presentation outlines a comprehensive framework for implementing research and evidence-based counseling interventions in schools.

It begins with a foundational overview of legal and ethical principles in counseling, emphasizing informed consent, confidentiality, and equity. The presentation then introduces a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) model for identifying students who need counseling, selecting interventions to match their needs, and using targeted programs for each tier.

Practical strategies are shared for creating and adapting counseling sessions, setting specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals, and systematically monitoring progress using quantitative and qualitative data.

Participants will learn to navigate challenges in implementing group and individual sessions, especially with varying age groups, and how to respond to obstacles such as scheduling and crisis situations. Through case studies and tools for decision-making, this session provides a step-by-step guide to making data-informed decisions about continuing, adjusting, or intensifying interventions.

By the end, school mental health professionals will gain actionable methods for counseling interventions that enhance students' social-emotional and academic outcomes.

Evidence

The approaches discussed in this presentation are grounded in established research and best practices for school-based counseling. Evidence from organizations such as the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) shows that structured social-emotional interventions within an MTSS framework result in improved student outcomes, including academic performance, emotional regulation, and social behavior. Techniques for goal setting, progress monitoring, and data-driven decision-making are also supported by case studies and best practices in educational psychology, demonstrating positive, measurable impacts on students' social-emotional health.

Learning Objective 1

Participants will be able to identify students needing support and determine appropriate counseling interventions.

Learning Objective 2

Participants will be able to establish counseling goals and monitor students' progress through systematic data collection.

Learning Objective 3

Participants will be able to implement evidence-based counseling strategies and adjust interventions based on individual student needs.
