Dr. Paulette Harris received her Doctorate from the University of South Carolina - Columbia. She completed her internship as a doctoral student in Montessori Education at the USC-Columbia. She holds the Cree-Walker Endowed Chair at Augusta University and is the Founder and Director of the Augusta University Literacy Center.

Brief Session Description

In this session, teachers attending will be given information concerning how to prevent and manage aggressive young children. Included will be stages of crises with accompanying strategies for each stage. These strategies will be preventative.

Full Session Description

In this session, teachers will be shown samples of aggressive and violent episodes that they will discuss afterwards. Discussions will include why aggression is becoming very commonplace in today's society. This will be followed by ways to decrease the number of children expressing such aggressive behaviors. In addition, ways to combat increased societal violence will be discussed. Teachers will be shown strategies that decrease aggression becoming an accepted form of behavior. Examples of non-violent role models will be noted. Examples of support and resources including reduced class size and additional teacher planning time will be recommended. In fact, at the session teachers will be encouraged to seek further training on working with student with emotional/behavioral problems. Such training should consist of addressing skills such as diffusing crises, decreasing negative behaviors and avoiding power struggles. Teachers will be directed to research on how to work with young children with aggressive and violent behaviors by using interventions that will be recommended.
