Creating Courageous Contenders

Tosha M. Croom, Center for Teacher Effectiveness

This is an interactive session will equip educators with practical solutions to common disruptive behaviors. Educators will take off their teacher hats and view the academic setting from the student’s perspective. As they embark upon this journey they will identify three common misconceptions that lead to poor classroom management: all students know how to behave in an academic setting; all educators know how to be equitable disciplinarians; and all students recognize the value of education. While identifying the aforementioned misconceptions, strategies will be outlined to assist educators with structuring a classroom/school that operates with civility and personal accountability. The tools that will be the catalyst for this transformation are the following strategies: the Teach-to’s, Refocusing, and Timing. Anecdotes, role playing, and data will motivate all participants to reflect consciously over their current classroom management techniques and motivate them to make adjustments. Also the strategies will assist with lowering the amount of discipline referrals for minor offenses and as well as decrease the time teachers spend documenting student’s misbehavior. Upon leaving this session educators will be empowered and equipped with the necessary tools that will afford them the Time to Teach.
