Strand #1
Head: Academic Achievement & Leadership
Strand #2
Home: Family & Community Engagement
Relevance
This proposal directly supports the strand of Academic Achievement & Leadership by demonstrating how leadership practices rooted in data use and culture-building lead to measurable academic gains. Participants will examine strategies that improve End-of-Course exam performance, increase graduation rates, and strengthen overall school achievement. By engaging in activities that connect leadership behaviors with communication styles, participants will be better equipped to guide students, staff, and schools toward sustainable success.
It also aligns with the strand of Home: Family & Community Engagement by emphasizing the role of authentic relationships in student achievement. Participants will learn how to build trust with families, create welcoming environments for parents and caregivers, and establish shared beliefs with all stakeholders. These strategies ensure that students—particularly those in alternative settings—experience a sense of belonging and support that extends beyond the classroom and into the community.
Brief Program Description
Resiliency in students begins with resiliency in school leadership. Cedrick Richie reveals how strong leaders create cultures of belonging, safety, and high expectations in alternative education—and back it up with measurable results. With graduation rates averaging 98.2% and EOC scores above district and state averages, Cedrick’s approach shows how schools can thrive against the odds. Participants will engage in interactive activities that link leadership behaviors, cultural shifts, and data strategies to student resiliency. This session is designed to empower educators to create schools where both students and staff bounce back stronger, with culture and outcomes aligned.
Summary
Alternative schools face some of the most complex challenges in education—limited resources, unstable staffing, disengaged families, and students who often enter feeling misunderstood. Yet these schools also hold the greatest potential for transformation when leadership, culture, and data are aligned.
This interactive session will provide participants with practical, research-based strategies that have been proven effective in alternative education settings. Participants will begin by completing an assessment to identify their own communication style, equipping them with insight to strengthen relationships with students and families. From there, the session will model how to aggregate and interpret data in accessible ways, using data points to guide decision-making and improve student outcomes.
The workshop will also break down specific strategies for closing the belief gap, implementing flexible learning curriculum, and fostering authentic relationships with students, families, and staff. These practices have led to measurable gains such as improved state testing scores, consistently strong End-of-Course exam performance, and graduation rates exceeding 98%. Participants will see how these strategies not only impact individual students but also elevate entire schools and districts.
In addition, the session will explore how creating flexible learning environments, establishing student mentoring and advocacy programs, and prioritizing belonging can improve attendance, build resilience, and foster a positive climate. These approaches empower students to engage more deeply, boost morale, and ultimately increase academic achievement.
By the end of the session, participants will leave with actionable strategies they can implement immediately: understanding their communication style, using data as a tool rather than a barrier, building culture rooted in authentic relationships, and designing flexible, student-centered systems that drive both equity and achievement.
Evidence
The effectiveness of the proposed strategies is supported by both national research and field-tested outcomes from a five-year case study at Richland One EXCEL Academy. The success documented at EXCEL Academy was a direct result of implementing the same strategies that will be presented in this session—centering leadership on culture-building, using data as a decision-making tool, creating flexible learning pathways, and prioritizing authentic student and family engagement.
Field-Tested Evidence (EXCEL Academy Case Study):
-
Graduation Rate Performance: EXCEL Academy achieved an extraordinary 98.2% average graduation rate, far surpassing the South Carolina statewide average of 83.3%.
-
District Impact: Implementation of these strategies contributed to a 4.5% annual increase in the district’s overall graduation rate.
-
End-of-Course (EOC) Exam Results:
-
Algebra I: 87.6% proficiency (vs. SC state average ~51%)
-
English II: 88.2% passage rate (vs. SC state average ~70%)
-
Biology: 67% passage rate (vs. SC state average ~47%)
-
U.S. History: 61% passage rate (vs. SC state average ~44%)
-
These results demonstrate that strategies emphasizing leadership, culture, and data can produce outcomes in alternative schools that not only meet but outperform state and district benchmarks.
Supporting Research:
-
Positive school climate and strong student–staff relationships improve engagement and academic outcomes (Thapa, Cohen, Guffey, & Higgins-D’Alessandro, 2013).
-
Data-driven leadership enhances decision-making and raises student achievement (Hamilton et al., 2009; Marsh, Pane, & Hamilton, 2006).
-
Flexible learning environments increase graduation rates and engagement in alternative schools (Lehr, Tan, & Ysseldyke, 2009).
-
Mentoring and advocacy programs promote belonging, resilience, and persistence (Rhodes, 2005; DuBois et al., 2011).
The EXCEL Academy case study provides compelling, field-tested evidence that the proposed strategies—building culture through leadership, leveraging data, engaging families, and creating flexible pathways—produce measurable, replicable success in alternative education.
