Relevance

I believe the Read 2 Rap Program/ workshop is relevant to Teachers that want to actively engage their students in the classroom. This program has been proven to boost academic achievement and build confidence in students when they have to work with key vocabulary in any subject. These are concepts and strategies that I used to graduate from high school and college. I kept a dictionary and thesaurus with me as I navigated my way through the challenges of understanding the "Big words" in the world of Academia. I currently teach in the Detroit Public School System, where I have been blessed to impact lives by showing our students different was to acquire knowledge and process information. I also have an afterschool Lifestyle/ Leadership group where these strategies for comprehension are taught as well.

Brief Program Description

Creativity will abound in your classroom as you tap into your students’ hidden talents. Learn how to use Rap, Rhyme & Poetry to teach Key vocabulary in Reading, Writing and Performance Arts Education. Teachers at all levels can benefit from seeing how enjoyable teaching is when students are actively engaged in the learning process.

Summary

The Read 2 Rap Program is a proven In School/ After School Curriculum that infuses the Art of Poetry and Rap with Grade Level Vocabulary for reading & writing. Students test and study grade level vocabulary words to increase academic achievement. My Recipe for Engaging Students with Text are as follows:

  1. Start with Text or A Topic
  2. Pull out Vocabulary
  3. Define the Vocabulary Words
  4. Find Antonym and Synonyms
  5. Write it all in your journal

Student Assessments and Presentations are held at the end of the semester (January and June)

Evidence

My proof of known research: The Rap 2 Read Program Data is Based on I-Ready Assessment Test Scores within the Vocabulary section of the test.. Results show that 82% of program participants have met or exceeded state standard expectations for grade level vocabulary.
