When students and staff experience chronic stress, it negatively impacts their motivation, performance, and wellbeing, Participants in this engaging workshop will walk away with simple research-based practices from the fields of Mindfulness and Positive Psychology, that they can utilize with both themselves and students to reduce stress and anxiety, improve attention and performance, and strengthen overall physical and psychological well-being.
Summary
Stress is an issue of global concern among teachers, students, and well, humans in general. Chronic stress is harmful to our physical, mental, and social- emotional health. Additionally, when students and staff feel stressed, it negatively impacts their motivation, performance, and overall wellbeing, which can affect the morale and resilience of the home, the classroom, the organization, and the community.
Research-based practices from the fields of Mindfulness and Positive Psychology have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety and boost well-being and self-reported happiness. In this inspirational, experiential, and highly engaging workshop, “Taking Time to B.R.E.A.T.H.E” participants will learn strategies that have been shown to strengthen efficacy, performance, the ability to focus attention, and overall physical and psychological well-being. They will walk away with simple, easy-to-implement strategies and practices that they
can use themselves for their own personal and professional growth, and that they can teach in the classroom to improve student capacity for engagement, achievement, and well-being. Additionally, these skills can be practiced collaboratively with staff building collective efficacy and stronger community, positively impacting school climate and culture. This workshop provides an easy framework to give staff the understanding, motivation, and practices needed to work on becoming better humans, better educators, and better organizations.

Evidence
This workshop is based on two courses that I designed that were featured in my doctoral dissertation. Teachers in the study reported details about how the research-based practices they learned from the realms of mindfulness and positive psychology strengthened their well-being, engagement and efficacy at work. Furthermore, the shift in the teachers’ wellbeing also positively impacted their relationships with students and the climate and culture of their classrooms.
