Enough talk about diversity! Hot topics in education include valuing diversity, culturally responsive teaching, and other buzzword phrases. It is time we extend the conversation to include actionable steps and talk about inclusivity because diversity without inclusivity just doesn’t work.
Brief Program Description
Enough talk about diversity! It is time we extend the conversation to include actionable steps to inclusivity because diversity without inclusivity just doesn’t work. This presentation will explore power and privilege in today’s society and discuss ideological factors related to unconscious bias. Participants will walk away with strategies to help them become more inclusive educators to ensure success for all students.
Summary
In a society that publicly states its commitment to equality, freedom, and liberty, most would be appalled at the inequities that exist in the US education system. From the achievement gaps in minority groups to the gaps that exist between socioeconomic statuses, the gaps are placing certain groups of children at an unfair disadvantage and perpetuating the poverty cycles in our society.
This session will explore critical policies and practices that perpetuate these cycles such as societal biases and ideological factors leading to perceptions of other groups of people. Participants identify core beliefs that affect their teaching and leadership and develop strategies to align daily actions with those beliefs. Further, participants will explore the six signature traits of inclusive educators and develop strategies to enhance the entire school community’s practices regarding inclusivity to ensure success for all students.
