Summary
Colorism impacts a black student’s self-esteem, academic success, behavior, mental health, and other areas of healthy functioning. Addressing colorism is possible by implementing Social Emotional Learning. Evidence-based SEL is effective to address colorism in schools and apply in other disciplines. Integrating SEL into schools is likely to have a major impact towards the end of colorism while improving engagement of black students. School counselors are especially situated to address colorism.
