Relevance
Relevance - More than ever, our schools need to know how to teach with the highest impact strategies, tools and processes. These 4 steps will help us to teach smarter versus harder; putting the academic achievement hat on our heads! We are competing with some major stressors in our world and that means we must reach and teach our students with evidenced-based tools that prevent and close any gaps for learning. Inequities in education have been around for way too long. We know, through science and research, how to teach so ALL students have equal opportunities to reach high levels of learning. These 4 steps will make it easier for us to close those gaps and inequities every single day as we plan for our student learning.
Brief Program Description
Merging neuroscience, formative assessment process and differentiation, Instructional Cha-Chas are 4 steps (chunk/chew/check/change) for planning and implementing lessons that prevent and close gaps in all subject areas and grades. You will get templates, tools, and strategies for teaching content so it’s meaningful, for engaging students with high-impact thinking, and for examining and responding to daily student evidence so ALL students get it to “Got It!”
Summary
What if there was an evidenced-based protocal to help you crush academic gaps and prevent future ones from ever forming? Good news: there is! Through studying top educational research and by blending cognitive science, the formative assessment process, and differentiated instruction into the following 4 steps, you can double the speed of learning in your classroom (Hattie, 2009) (Black & Wiliam, 1998) (Adescope,Trevisan, & Sundarajan, 2017). This protocal is called the Instructional Cha-Chas, and it has four key “dance steps”: Chunk, Chew, Check, Change.
The cycle begins with Chunk, which is where the teacher uses top instructional practices to help students engage with content in a meaningful, memorable, cohesive way. Then students process their new learning in the Chew step. During Chew, students are responsible for working through and deepening their understanding of the content. (The highest-impact chews that students should engage with on a daily basis, will be shared, demonstrated, and practiced during the workshop.) While students are chewing, the teacher starts checking their thinking and learning and that third step is simply called: Check. During Check, the teacher observes students’ outcomes on their Chew work and begins to formulate a plan for how to move forward. That plan is the final step: Change. During Change, the teacher differentiates what s/he does next in order to facilitate the closing of the learning gaps. The two change tools that will be explored in this workshop will be: three power steps in feedback and reteaching. (BONUS: strategies are for virtual learning and/or in-person learning).
This workshop is based on the 2020 Teacher’s Choice Award-Winning book by the presenter: Teaching with the Instructional Cha-Chas: 4 Steps to Make Learning Stick. This workshop will be 60% content and 40% processing by participants.
Evidence
Teacher clarity = .75 Effect Size; Formative Assessment Process = .90; Building on Prior Knowledge = .68, .98; Evaluation and Reflection = .75; Elaboration and organization = .75; Transfer Strategies = .86; Strategy to Integrate with Prior Knowledge = .93 (Hattie, 2009, 2016); Retrieval Practice Research: Agarwal, Pooja; Chamberlain, Roger; Bain, Patrice; and Roediger (2012 – current research); Most current cognitive science to support the strategies, tools, and learning processes.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will summarize why the Instructional Cha-Chas are so powerful and should be a daily planning routine so more students get it to “Got It!”
- Participants will use and evaluate 3 high impact processing techniques that help K-12 students digest meaningful content so that it can be used and consolidated in the brain (technology tools too). (Chunk & Chew)
- Participants will examine the steps to assess student mastery with that day’s Learning Target by quickly “checking for understanding” with these formatives. (The 5 E’s = Examine Evidence Every day from Every student – that is Equity!) (Check)
- Participants will explore quick and easy ways to respond to this daily data through power feedback and reteaching. (Change)
Biographical Sketch
LeAnn Nickelsen, M.Ed., educator and Certified Jensen Trainer (brain-research) for over 20 years, has authored/co-authored 14 educational books. Two of which are: Teaching with the Instructional Cha-Chas: 4 Steps to Make Learning Stick (Solution Tree, 2019) and Deeper Learning: 7 Powerful Strategies for In-Depth and Longer-Lasting Learning (Co-Authored with Eric Jensen; Corwin Press). LeAnn currently trains and coaches educators to activate the highest impact tools, to close and prevent gaps, and to provide equity among the most vulnerable students: high poverty, struggling learners, ELs, special education, etc. She is a recipient of a Teacher of the Year award and is a nationally-trained expert on student learning, passionate about providing educators with strategies that can be used immediately to maximize learning in the classroom for ALL students. She presents at national and international conferences on a regular basis.
