Relevance
Dan and I are the principal and assistant principal for a high school in the St. Paul Public School district. 4 years ago we noticed there was an alarming number of students being expelled from our district, furthermore we noticed the students were predominately African-American boys. In an effort to keep these kids in our district, give them a second chance and teach them skills to do things differently we created the Alternative to Expulsion (A2E) program. The program was originally designed for middle school and high school students, but we have recently expanded it to elementary students. This program fits really well with topics of racial equity, belonging, second chances, drop out prevention and alternative education.
Brief Program Description
Dan and I would give an overview of the Alternative to Expulsion program, how we created it, how much it costs, how we do it. The target audience would be middle school and high school teachers, and administrators. We would discuss the differences between our elementary program and our middle/high school program. Dan and I have worked together a long time and have a great presentation style
Summary
Our alternative to expulsion model is a practical model that can be used in any high school, middle school or elementary school setting. The A2E program is a 45 day program that helps keep kids in school. We would give practical take aways on how to create this program in your own school.
Evidence
The A2E program has kept over 350 kids from being expelled from the St. Paul Public School district.
