Participants will review action steps taken, and consider them alongside their own environments.

Summary

Our presentation will explain action steps undertaken to build and sustain a high school culture where all students successfully participate in a rigorous curriculum and graduate on-time. The presenters led a highly diverse public high school, raising the school ranking on state and private ranking systems (the public school is now ranked among the most prestigious in the nation). During the tenure of leadership, the school’s graduation rate was consistently above 99%. The presenters will highlight both reactive and proactive action steps undertaken to provide every student with access to a rigorous curriculum. Capatilizing on their experience leading a high school, the presenters will discuss the importance of building a culture of success with internal stakeholders to maximize the curriculum, as well as active communication with parents to support the efforts of teachers and the involvement of students. The presenters will also detail both the specific and generalized support and interventions available for all students, and suggest ways to work within budgetary and contractual restraints to meet the varied needs of students. The experience of the presenters reflects that there is no silver bullet or magic product to build and sustain the realistic expectation of high achievement for all; rather, building and sustaining that culture is grounded in the relationships that define the school. Participants will review action steps taken, and consider them alongside their own environments.

Evidence

Without revealing any self-identifying information, the evidence is:

  • raised the school ranking on private rankings (Washington Post, Newsweek/Daily Beast, US News & World Report)
  • increased participation with AP courses by over 86%, while maintaining average AP exam scores that exceeded state and international averages (this increased participation was realized across sub-group participation as well)
  • raised annual graduation rate to 99%, 100%, 100%, 99% over four years
