Biographical Sketch

Mike O’Neal, Executive Director, Community United Services Inc., Parent University, Savannah, GA

Michael is a founder of Parent University and now serves as the Executive Director of Community United Services Inc., which is the entity that manages the Parent University program. O’Neal has been the chief steward of this grass roots community based program since its inception here in Savannah in 1999. O’Neal has given talks about Parent University and community building many places in the United States and several countries. Currently Michael is facilitating Parent University and its new component “Early Learning College” program for the parents of children birth to five years old.

Mr. O’Neal also presently hosts the TV show “Parent University TV”. He previously co-wrote the “Dear Diane and Mike” column and currently is a contributing columnist for the Savannah Morning News. He has managed a pilot project for the City of Savannah called the Strong Families Program to give parental training to the parents of youth who were considered at risk by the schools or courts. He has co-facilitated Parental Engagement seminars at locations in Georgia and South Carolina in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Education which was featured on Georgia Public Broadcasting.

O’Neal is currently on paid leave from International Paper to allow him to do the work he is doing with Parent University and Early Learning College. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Savannah Early Childhood Foundation and he has served on many Boards of Directors or councils in the Savannah area.

Michael was listed as one of the 2015 Fortune Magazine “Heroes of the 500” Other recognition's include being a Grand Marshal of the 2014 Martin Luther King Junior Observance Day Association Parade. In March 2013 he was given Arthur A. “Don” Mendonsa Visionary Award by the Chatham-Savannah Youth Futures Authority. 2010 Leadership Award from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. In 2006 and 2010 he was given a Georgia Outstanding Citizen Award given by the Secretary of State of GA. He also received a Resolution of Commendations from the 2006 and 2010 Georgia House of Representatives and a Resolution of Commendation from the Georgia Senate in 2010, the Phi Delta Kappa Association of Professional Educators’ “Friend of Education honoree” award, the 2008 Spirit of Excellence, Black business Awards’ “Outstanding Achievement Award for Leadership & Business Contributions”, the Martin Luther King Junior Observance Day Association recipient of their Humanitarian Award in 2007.

He is a member of the Baha’i Faith and presently serves as one of the Auxiliary Board Members for the Faith in the State of Georgia and Bermuda. He has contributed to several Race Unity Picnics in Savannah. He enjoys mentoring and travels with youth to accompany them on their path to social, educational and spiritual development.
