Abstract
Across Georgia, teachers are working to implement the basics of the Science of Reading across all disciplines - including mathematics. A key component of the shifts focuses on vocabulary instruction that is developmentally appropriate to all learners.
In this session, participants will explore vocabulary terms from mathematics content through the organizational framework of tiered vocabulary (Beck, McKeown, Kucan, 2013). Along with a discussion of the use of this framework, several instructional strategies will be modeled and practiced.
This session is focused on elementary-level instruction.

Description
Instruction in mathematics classrooms includes a variety of vocabulary terms that may be familiar or unfamiliar to students with a variety of prior and background knowledges. When planning based on updated requirements of state legislation and the Science of Reading research, vocabulary is an essential component to helping students navigate mathematical contexts.
During instructional activities, vocabulary can be a barrier for individuals or groups of students to demonstrate knowledge. Based on the conceptual framework of Tiered Vocabulary initially created by Beck, McKeown, and Kucan (2013), this session will help participants to explore tier 2 and 3 vocabulary terms within the mathematics content area. Specifically, the Tiered Vocabulary framework will be used to look at tasks and test questions to identify barriers. In addition, specific supports and strategies will be modeled and practiced that can be taken back to the classroom for immediate implementation.
This session is focused on elementary-level mathematics standards.
